What's in a Name

One night, driving home from work, I was staring at a red stop light, deep in thought, pondering what I would title my blog.  Suddenly, my car warned me that I needed to get gas; that I was running on empty.  Those three words jogged across my mind a few times.  "Running on empty.  Running on empty.  Running on..."  And suddenly, I started to apply that metaphor to my life.  What is it that I run on?  What is it that I want to run on?  What do I want to be?  And then I came to the conclusion:  Out of everything in life, I want to be happy.  Everyday.  Not just at certain times, or around certain people.  I want to be happy simply existing.

So, I decided to title my blog "Running on Happiness" because happiness is the fuel that moves my bones.  It gets me out of bed in the morning and allows me sleep peacefully at night.  It sings to me when I'm sad and laughs when I embarrass myself.  Happiness is not always easy, because life is not always easy.  But fortunately, we are given two gifts: the opportunity for a new day, and choice.  Will we make the most of it?

I don't want this blog to be strictly about what I wear.  I want it to be what I titled it.  It is my hope to gain more knowledge, more insight and to share with each other, so that we all can become happier people.  Because I've been told by my friend, "happiness is a serious problem."

But tell me friend, before I go, what is it that you run on?

This is such a great post! I really like the inspiration behind your blog title. And I love lifestyle blogs - blogs about everything. I'm trying to incorporate everything as well. I try and run on happiness too, and definitely faith. Faith that I can create happiness, not just expect it to find me. Because we all know, that doesn't always happen. And faith in lots of other things, but I'll stop there. Thanks for getting us to think!

I think your posts everyday make it very clear that you run on happiness.
You are happy being you and happy in your life, and that it absolutely shines through.

I think right now I run on hope and on the support I get from everyone around me!

Loved reading this.

I love this post--what a great reminder. I'm like you with the constant and consistent positivity...But I'd say I run on Grace. Grace given to me from God, from others, and from myself... it's a beautiful thing.

What a great post and your blog exudes happiness! I run on laughter. I love having a sense of humor and making others laugh; even if it’s at me expense. Laughter brings people together and lets you forget about your worries even for just a short time.

I love your blogs name! A LOT!! :) And the story is very inspiring. I would say that I run on faith. I wish I could say that I'm happy ALL of the time (I honestly do pretty well) but I'm not. But I have faith that I can be happy. So happy or sad, I run on faith. :)

I love what you said about being give two gifts: the opportunity for a new day, and choice.
Love how to decided to name your blog. It's a good philosophy for life.
What I run on....I have no idea. I'd say happiness, but it's a constant struggle for me of 'what makes me happy'. Running on....what I feel I guess.

Katie, I'm so glad you shared this! I've always loved the title of your blog & I'm really happy to know where it came from.

For me, I run on sugar. Kidding. Sort of... but happiness is definitely what I strive for. That and the feeling of being alive. I want to get hurt, I want to love, to laugh hard and get butterflies in my stomach. I want to cry and be in pain.. isn't that part of being human? I want experiences to move me... so that I always feel alive and not simply floating along.

You really do such a great job of sharing your happiness with all your readers...I know that stopping by your blog will be a boost of happiness, but not in an artificial way. Your stories and photos just exude warmth and happiness!! I think I run on a combination of tea and optimism. I guess that makes me opTEAmistic ;)

isn't it the truth that we can 'run' on happiness... i think there are two kinds of moments in life "fueling moments" and "filler moments". filler, as in the times that you are scrubbing the bathroom floor, or functioning... "fueling" are the ones that you live (or run) off of, that fuel your soul.

love the blog title.

That is a great idea! I'm going thru a really tough time at work right now and your blog is such an inspiration! Instead of being mad at my management, feeling frustrated and miserable, I tell myself that this is just a phase that I have to go thru and something really good is going to happen to me very soon! I have opened my blog with the same intentions - to concentrate on positive things, to notice all the beautiful things that life gives us and to share my happy moments with other people, so I truly feel and support every word in your blog!

I love your blog, it's so positive!! Thanks for this post, all the I wish/I'm thankful posts, for this aknowledgement of the good things in life; and also thanks for the tutorials, beyond being very clear, there's a sense of genuine want to share with others, giving a little back, that shows in them and I LOVE that.

I run on sharing unique moments with my FRIENDS, sunshine and music and, last but not least, my ever amazing partner.

I'll be looking forward for these Mondays' posts.

I just stumbled upon your blog and I am adding it to my list of favorites. I love the positive energy of it. Sadly, in our modern world, most people think that happiness is something that they are entitled to. I think it is something you choose and something you work for. You seem to be choosing it everyday. That's an inspiration. Thanks!

You are amazing Katie, you know that!? I loved this blog. You have a few inspirational blogs here but this is one of my favorites. Very meangiful and deep and we got a little background on the title of your blog as well. I have understood the gist of who you are (a shiny, smily, positive person) from the very first blogs I have read and seen of yours but now I see it even more and not just by the title of your blog. Not only are you gorgeous physically, you are a bright, intelligent, sharp, happy person who radiates all that happines from within, as well!! Which, therefore makes you even more beautiful!

Please Stop By & Check Out My Blog. I can use you as a new reader and I can use your positivity to shine through my blog, as well!!!

XOXO <3 Ada.
